ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Public Works Department is responsible for construction and maintenance of County roads and airports and for supervising several permanent road divisions that maintain private roads on behalf of the citizens in those districts. The department employs architects and engineers who prepare construction plans as well as supervise construction of these facilities. The department also acts as the County's surveyor and processes subdivision and survey maps. It administers the County's solid waste management functions. The department also manages the County water agency.

In addition, the Public Works Department oversees the operation and maintenance of several County service areas. These County service areas include both water and sewer districts along with road, lighting, and flood maintenance districts.

The Facilities Management Division of Public Works provides for the maintenance, repair, and minor renovation of County buildings, parks and grounds. In addition, the division also provides maintenance, custodial, and landscape services, and often uses general assistance recipients and jail inmates to assist full-time County employees in providing these services.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Under direction, to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance, installation and repair of County buildings and equipment; and to perform other related work as required.

Effective September 30, 2021, employees in this position at this worksite are required to be COVID-19 vaccinated in accordance with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Order issued on August 5, 2021, unless they have a qualifying medical or religious exemption, which will then require the employee to submit to COVID-19 testing on a weekly basis in lieu of vaccination.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Mechanical Crafts Worker II class is distinguished from the lower class of Mechanical Crafts Worker I in that incumbents in this class not only have a specialty but also can perform skilled or semi-skilled work in several other crafts as well as being familiar with County buildings and equipment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Repairs pumps, motors, transformers, heaters, wiring, switches, generators, fans; uses electrical test equipment; repairs pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical or electronic equipment and components; replaces light bulbs and ballasts; runs electrical conduit; repairs sinks, flush valve toilets, lavatories, water lines; unclogs sewer lines; replaces wax rings; checks for gas leaks; installs and maintains air conditioning units, condensers, compressors, evaporators, expansion and discharge valves, temperature and humidity controls; services air filters; repairs and maintains boilers, cooling towers, coil fans; chemically treats boiler water; may maintain County elevators; fabricates, assembles, installs, repairs duct work, hand rails, steel security screens, steps and platforms; uses gas and electric welders; may make routine purchases of small parts and supplies; and services oxygen, nitrogen and nitrous oxide equipment. May build and repair cabinets, counters, bookshelves; hang and repair doors; install and repair locks; repair Venetian blinds, desks, chairs, tables; construct and move partition, install paneling, Formica tops, windows; hang tape and texture sheetrock; paint a variety of structures; refinish furniture; paints signs; install floor and ceiling tiles; repair roofs; and work on other related projects; may perform asbestos related work; may oversee a small crew of non-paid workers; may act as a lead worker on a particular project; and performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Any combination of education and experience sufficient to directly demonstrate possession and application of the following:

Knowledge of: Standard tools, methods, practices and materials involved in craft projects or work assignments; prevailing building codes; safe work practices; standard tools, methods, practices and materials involved in several trades other than specialty; County buildings and equipment; basic electronics.

Ability to: Estimate material and labor needs; read, understand and work from general instructions, building plans, sketches and specifications; work in close proximity to jail inmates as assigned; establish cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work; use the tools, materials and equipment involved in several trades; act as a lead worker on special projects.

These requirements are typically attained with two years of experience comparable to a Mechanical Crafts Worker I with Shasta County.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

  • Possession of a valid California driver license

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Facilities Management Department is currently seeking to fill a total of (2) Crafts Worker II positions. (1) on the Maintenance Crew and (1) on the Projects Crew at Facilities Management. The ideal candidate for both positions shall have a broad general knowledge and experience in the building trades as well as the corresponding skills and experience outlined in the following position descriptions.

- Maintenance Crew Position (1): The ideal candidate for this position shall be self-motivated, safety conscious, and flexible to an everchanging workload and environment; be proficient in basic plumbing repairs, low and high voltage electrical installation, troubleshooting/repair, conduit and wiring installation. Journeyman level skill in HVAC and Refrigeration maintenance, troubleshooting/repair, and installation. Ability to perform basic patching and painting of walls, ability to assemble and install building and furnishing components, ability to safely operate aerial platform lifts and forklifts; ability to estimate projects for labor and material that involve multiple trades, work as part of a crew or solo with minimal supervision, ability to work courteously, efficiently, and cleanly in occupied office environments.

- Projects Crew Position (2): The ideal candidate for this position shall have a broad knowledge and experience in the following building trades, as well as Journeyman Level skills in one or two of the following trades. Plumbing rough in and top out, low and high voltage electrical troubleshooting/repair, installation of electrical conduits and fixtures, wood and steel stud framing, installation and finishing of drywall, painting, concrete forming and finishing, metal and composition roofing installation and repairs, erection of packaged steel structures, and MIG welding. Experience and proficiency in safely operating heavy equipment such as skid steer loader, mini excavator, backhoe, and various types of aerial platform lifts up to 60ft. Ability to accurately estimate projects for labor and materials that involve multiple trades. Ability to safely and thoughtfully solve complex problems in the field. Ability to maintain a clean and safe working environment during and upon completion of projects. Ability to work in the field as part of a crew or solo with minimal supervision, ability to work courteously, efficiently, and cleanly in occupied office environments.
