Shasta College Awarded $1.8M as Partner Campus With #CaliforniansForAll College Corps

REDDING, CA  –  Shasta College students will soon be eligible to earn up to $10,000 in student aid per year while volunteering their time to local non-profits thanks to a grant from the California Governor’s Office and the #CaliforniansForAll College Corps. Shasta College will receive $1.8M for their program, the “Shasta College Service-Learning Center,” and will match 100 full-time students starting in the Fall Semester with local service learning opportunities. Students must be enrolled full-time to be eligible and provide 450 hours of service in critical issue areas such as K-12 education, climate action, and food insecurity.

Shasta College was one of 45 total campuses from the University of California, California State University, community college, and private university systems to be selected as a program participant via a competitive grant application process. Shasta College is collaborating with the College of the Siskiyous, College of the Redwoods, Chico State University, and Humboldt State University, each of whom also received awards. Together, they will develop best practices, identify and coordinate service-learning sites, and promote transfer opportunities. Students will also benefit from this partnership as faculty from the different institutions work together to develop transferable, credit-bearing courses for service learning and civic engagement.

“The Shasta College Service-Learning Center provides our students with a historic opportunity to develop as civic-minded leaders,” said Dr. Joe Wyse, Superintendent/President of Shasta College. “The awards from this program will help mitigate the disproportionate economic impact of the pandemic for many of our lower-income students and provide students an opportunity to learn valuable occupational skills while serving others. The goals of the #CaliforniansForAll College Corps perfectly align with Shasta College’s continued commitment to the communities we serve and workforce training.”

Eligibility and selection criteria are being developed so students can apply for the program in time for the Fall semester of 2022.
