Dr. Joe Wyse, Superintendent/President of Shasta College, and Dr. Kevin O’Rorke, Vice President of Student Services contributed to the festive atmosphere of student Welcome Day by participating in the Ice Bucket Challenge in support of donations to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) research.  Commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, the Ice Bucket Challenge phenomenon supporting this cause has run rampant across the U.S.  Said Dr. Wyse, “This challenge was a unique way to bring attention to a great cause.  The latest numbers show that donations from this campaign to the ALS Association are nearing $100 million.”

This year’s Welcome Day focused on celebrating the 50 year anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibiting racial discrimination in employment and education, and outlawing segregation in public facilities.

Thanks to the support and participation of over 70 local vendors, live entertainment, and free food and giveaways, Welcome Day was a tremendous success.  “This event, held at the start of every school year, is a great way for students to learn about vendors and service providers in our local community, and become familiar with Shasta College staff and the services we provide.  We believe creating this connection with our students helps directly in their future success,” said Dr. Wyse.
