Hazardous Materials Business Plan
In order to provide emergency responders with information that will assist them in preventing or mitigating damage due to a release of hazardous material, facilities in Shasta County that handle hazardous materials in "Reportable Quantities" are required (California Health & Safety Code Chapter 6.95, Section 25503) to submit a Hazardous Materials Business Plan (HMBP) to the Shasta County Environmental Health Division. "Reportable Quantities" means any hazardous materials handled in quantities equal to or greater than 500 pounds, 55 gallons, or 200 cubic feet of a gas (calculated at standard temperature and pressure). Submitting the HMBP also satisfies federal and state Community Right-To-Know laws.
There are on our main campus a dozen different department/programs/locations which handle hazardous materials in quantities which meet the above criteria including:
- Art
- Auto Machine Shop
- Automotive Technology
- Campus Center
- Diesel
- Heavy Equipment
- Physical Education
- Physical Plant, Trades Shop
- Physical Plant, Transportation
- Physical Plant, Warehouse
- Physical Sciences
- Welding
If any one of the above programs were located at a separate address, they would be required to prepare their own HMBP. But because they are all part of one facility, we are able to submit just one, somewhat massive, HMBP which covers all of the programs.
The HMBP details information regarding the hazardous materials handled on campus, includes the Shasta College Emergency/Contingency Plan and describes the training program for new employees as well as annual training and refresher courses.
