Some definitions to help you understand your notification:

  • Academic Standing: the college's evaluation of your grades and progress (completed units compared to attempted units).
  • Good Standing: an academic standing assigned to a student after they have attempted at least 12 units at Shasta College and have earned at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA ("academic"), and the percentage of Withdrawal ("W"), Incomplete ("I"), and/or Not Passed ("NP") grades is below 50% their attempted units ("progress").
  • Academic Notice* Level 1: an academic standing assigned to a student after they have attempted at least 12 units at Shasta College and have earned below a 2.0 cumulative GPA. A student can also be on academic notice if the percentage of Withdrawal ("W"), Incomplete ("I"), and/or Not Passed ("NP") grades reach 50% or more of their attempted units ("progress"). Students at Level 1 are strongly recommended to meet with their Counselor and/or complete the Academic Notice Workshop.
  • Academic Notice* Level 2: an academic standing assigned to a student who was already placed on Academic Notice Level 1 in the previous semester, and their Shasta College cumulative GPA continues to remain below the minimum 2.0 required, and/or their cumulative W, I, and/or NP grades continue at 50% or more of their attempted units ("progress").

At Academic Notice Level 2, students lose their eligibility for the California College Promise Grant (CCPG) and their priority registration, and a hold is placed on their registration until they meet with a Counselor or complete the Academic Notice Workshop.

At Shasta College, students on Academic Notice have multiple tools and resources to help them regain Good Standing:

  • An Academic Notice workshop designed to help students assess their circumstances, learn/refresh their knowledge of academic policies, learn about campus resources, and focus on unique needs to regain Good Standing.
  • Counseling: Every Shasta College student has access to a Counselor who can provide educational and career counseling.
  • A 14-unit limit registration restriction to help students better balance their workload (a discussion with a Counselor may result in clearing this restriction).

Ultimately, getting students back in Good Standing is a shared responsibility. Shasta College provides guidance and resources for support, and the student assesses their situation, utilizes whatever resources best fit their experiences, and works on their personal and academic habits or goals as needed.

Students who do not regain Good Standing after three consecutive semesters may be subject to Academic Pause.

*Academic Notice was previously known as “Academic Probation.”
