Health Sciences Mission Statement
The Health Sciences Division, embracing the Shasta College Mission, commits to providing our students with excellent professional preparation while guiding them in developing their personal growth potential, interpersonal skills, and professional abilities to become a positive social force within our community. We will sustain a positive, creative, and innovative learning environment that is sensitive to diversity, while promoting awareness of the profound responsibilities that accompany the application of their knowledge and skills in the service to others.
Health Sciences Programs
For over 60 years, Shasta College has provided healthcare programs to Shasta County and the surrounding North State communities. Over the years, our faculty and staff have diligently worked to build a positive rapport with local hospitals, health care agencies and dental facilities.
Our programs include
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) Program - Established in 1965, this is a 2-year Associate in Science degree program preparing graduates to take the NCLEX-RN exam for California state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
- Vocational Nursing (VN) Program - Established in 1953, the VN program is a three-semester certificate program preparing graduates to take the NCLEX-PN exam for California state licensure as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
- Nurse Assistant/Home Health Aide (NA/HHA) Program - Established in 1964 is a one-semester course that prepares the student to be certified by the State of California as a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) upon successful completion of the NNAAP exam. Students also have the option of completing the Home Health Aide portion of the class to expand their career opportunities.
- Dental Hygiene (DH) Program - Established in 2000, the Dental Hygiene Program is a 2-year Associate in Science degree program preparing graduates to take the state and regional exams for licensure as a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH).
- Health Information Technology (HIT) Program - Established in 2016, this is a 2-year Associate of Science degree program preparing the graduate to take the national (AHIMA) exam for certification as a Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT).
- Health Information Management (HIM) Program - Established in 2016, this is a 2-year Baccalaureate of Science degree program preparing the graduate to take the national (AHIMA) exam for certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
- Medical Assisting (MA) Program - Established in Spring of 2017, the Medical Assisting program is a 2-semester certification program with an additional 180 hour externship to be completed after course work. Graduates are prepared to successfully complete one of three national/state exams to earn certification as a Medical Assistant (MA).
- Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program - The Physical Therapist Assistant Associate Degree Program is currently under development. To learn more about the program including accreditation, application process, enrollment criteria, and more, please click here.
Since 2007, Health Sciences courses have been offered in the Shasta College Downtown location. The campus is located at the north end of the Downtown Redding Promenade near the intersection of Market and Tehama Streets.
