Dance
“The truest expression of a people is in its dance…. Bodies never lie.” – Agnes de Mille
The Shasta College Dance program provides students the opportunity to study in an environment that challenges the student’s intellectual, expressive, and physical capabilities while studying under instructors who currently work professionally in the field of concert and theatrical dance. The department offers a wide range of classes that include introductory levels, which welcome non-majors and community members, to more intensified technical training for those students who wish to continue pursuing a career in the dance field. Course offerings include classes in ballet, jazz, modern dance, tap, choreography, and dance combinations. (See the Shasta College Catalog).
Each semester students are given the opportunity to perform before a live audience in a full evening’s work held in the Shasta College Theater. Additionally, interested students are encouraged to audition their own works of choreography to present at one of the two performances held during the year.
It is the philosophy of the dance program and its instructors to provide dance experiences as part of a basic arts education; aiming to provide all students with the knowledge and skills to understand and appreciate the fine arts.
As a student, you will engage in the technical training, performance, and academic study of dance with those who have a dedicated passion for the art form based on the belief that dance develops physical, spiritual, and personal growth. Whether your interest is in performing, working behind the scenes, choreography, or simply understanding and appreciating the world of dance, the Shasta College Dance Program can meet your needs!
