Common Course Numbering (CCN)
Between Fall 2025 and Fall 2027, California Community Colleges will adopt a statewide Common Course Numbering (CCN) system. This effort is designed to:
- Streamline credit transfers between community colleges and the CSU/UC systems
- Help students clearly identify transferable courses
- Enhance transparency and consistency in course planning
This change will affect approximately 75–80 of the highest volume transfer courses, standardizing course numbers, titles, and descriptions across the state.

Common Course Numbering (CCN) FAQ
Assembly Bill No. 1111 requires all California Community Colleges (CCCs) to adopt a Common Course Numbering (CCN) system for most credit-bearing, transferable courses. The goal of this system is to simplify and align course identification across all CCCs, making it easier for students to transfer between colleges and to four-year institutions such as CSU and UC campuses.
At Shasta College, this means certain courses will receive new course numbers that match equivalent courses at other community colleges throughout the state. While the numbers and some course titles may change, the content, units, transferability, and prerequisites remain the same. These are not new courses—they are simply renumbered versions of existing Shasta College courses to align with the new statewide CCN system.
The primary goals of CCN are to:
- Reduce confusion about course equivalency when students transfer
- Improve transparency in degree and certificate planning
- Help students avoid taking unnecessary or duplicate coursework
- Support timely degree completion and reduce excess unit accumulation
Shasta College is implementing these changes in phases, starting with high-enrollment, high-transfer volume courses. More courses will transition to the CCN system between Fall 2025 and Fall 2027 as part of a statewide rollout.
No. Courses you’ve already completed at Shasta College will still count toward your degree or transfer requirements. There is no need to retake any course due to this change.
No. The content and outcomes of the courses remain the same—only the subject codes, course numbers, and titles are being updated to align with the statewide system.
A full crosswalk of the affected courses is available above.
Examples include:
- ENGL-1A → ENGL-C1000
- MATH-14 → STAT-C1000
- PSYC-1A → PSYC-C1000
The new format uses a "C" to indicate it is part of the statewide Common Course Numbering system. For example, ENGL-C1000 will be the new designation for English 1A across the state.
You may complete the sequence using either the old or new numbering system. Counselors and faculty will help ensure that your education plan stays on track.
The first phase of CCN changes at Shasta College will begin in Fall 2025. More courses will transition in subsequent semesters.
No. The courses are still equivalent and approved for financial aid. Make sure to check your education plan and consult a counselor if you have questions.
Meeting with a counselor is always recommended when curriculum changes occur. Counselors can help you understand any course number updates and ensure your academic goals are not impacted.
