Title IX

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination, including discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy, and related conditions. It applies to all athletic programs and activities receiving federal funding, regardless of sex, gender identity, or gender expression. Title IX protects students, employees, and job applicants from discrimination.

Sexual harassment under Title IX includes unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, or any conduct of a sexual nature that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment, affecting a person's education or employment. This can occur between any members of the Shasta College community and may involve students, faculty, staff, or visitors.

Types of sexual harassment include:

1. Quid Pro Quo: Offering something in exchange for sexual favors (e.g., a grade for sex).
2. Severe or Pervasive Behavior: Harassment that denies someone equal access to education or work.

Under Title IX, you are entitled to fair and equitable treatment, free from discrimination based on sex. This includes:

• Equal Opportunity: You have the right to participate in all academic and extracurricular activities, including athletics, on an equal basis.
• Athletic Opportunities: You can inquire about available athletic opportunities and apply for athletic scholarships.
• Equitable Treatment: You are entitled to equal benefits in areas such as equipment, scheduling, transportation, coaching, locker rooms, facilities, medical services, and publicity.
• Gender Equity Coordinator: You have access to a Gender Equity Coordinator who can answer questions regarding gender equity laws.
• Complaint Rights: If you believe you have been discriminated against, you can file a confidential complaint with the U.S. Office for Civil Rights or the California Department of Education. You are also protected from retaliation for filing a complaint.
